Laundry Room Camera Obscura

A temporary installation at Playa Artist Residency

Camera obsuras are the oldest method of capturing images. Removing all the light in the room and installing a convex lens in a small opening projects an image outside on the opposite wall, upside down and backwards. The ephemeral image changes in real time as the light shifts, leaves move in the wind, cars drive by or people move through the scene. Using long exposures and a small aperture, documenting the image with a camera freezes it in time. This camera obscura was created in the laundry building of the Playa Artist Residency in Summer Lake, Oregon. 2016.
