Lost in Thought

Mercer Corridor, Valley Street – Seattle, WA

Commissioned by the Seattle Office of Arts and Culture.

A series of artworks intended to enliven the pedestrian environment of this rapidly developing area. 2014

Ellen was commissioned to devise ways to enliven the pedestrian environment through small scale interventions to promote walking and cycling. The area is a high-tech center for the City and is rapidly changing. Ellen designed a series of 7’ diameter porcelain mosaic inlays located at intersections where people gather, a pair of custom designed benches at the entrance of Lake Union Park, and a utility cover that appears throughout the neighborhood. These artistic details add texture and interest and reinforce a human scale to the street. All are integrated into the functional requirements of the streetscape.
