Each year, Ellen teaches a Study Abroad Program for the University of Washington Comparative History of Ideas Program in Lyon, France, on Art, Urbanism and Innovation. At the beginning of the session, she gives each student a pinhole camera outfitted with photosensitive paper to affix on their dorm window for the duration of the program. At the end, all cameras are returned and Ellen processes the results. She gives each student both their “view” as well as a composite photograph of all the other views. The light streaks across the sky document the sun’s movement through the duration of the program. The color is the result of the direct long exposure on the photographic paper.
